ANDERSEN AIR BASE, Guan – Andersen Elementary School fourth and fifth graders celebrated Pi Day by participating in a variety of engaging and creative activities that made math come alive.

Organized by the SMI teacher, Dr. Gemma Chadee, students explored the first 14 digits of pi to create colorful skylines, blending math and art in an imaginative way. They expressed their creativity through Pi‑ku poems, enjoyed tasting delicious pies, and laughed while creating silly ad lib stories all about pi. The 4th and 5th graders also learned about the history of pi, tested their knowledge with a fun quiz, and listened attentively to the story Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi read by Dr. Amanda Buniag. The celebration was filled with learning, laughter, and hands-on experiences that made math both meaningful and fun. Teachers supported the Pi Day activities by thoughtfully guiding, facilitating, and encouraging students throughout each experience.

Overall, students were motivated, joyful, and actively involved, making Pi Day a positive and memorable learning experience. Students described the celebration as “amazing,” “super-duper fun,” and “interesting.”  Students were amazed to discover that “Pi has tens of thousands of numbers and has been studied for roughly 4,000 years.”

The real pie, especially chocolate and banana cream, was a highlight for students, according to Dr. Anne Woodley. In all, Andersen Elementary’s Pi Day blended learning, creativity, and tasty treats into a memorable celebration of mathematics, one that clearly left students eager to learn more about Pi.
